What actually happens in your breakout rooms?

By Margaret Jackson FLPI ACC

What actually happens in your breakout rooms once you click ‘Open’? Silence? Confusion? One person doing all the talking? Or real learning? Breakout rooms are not off-stage time. They’re where online learning either comes alive… or quietly dies.

I often see facilitators relax once they click “Open Breakout Rooms.” Camera off. Mic muted. Waiting. That’s a missed opportunity. Because in virtual learning, the real work happens inside breakout rooms, not the plenary.

Skilled facilitators visit rooms to:
* Catch misunderstanding early
* Create psychological safety, especially for quieter voices
* Observe dynamics, not just outputs
* Nudge learning without taking over
* Sustain energy and accountability
* Run richer, insight-driven debriefs

Breakout rooms are not a break for the facilitator. They are the engine room of learning. A facilitator who never visits breakout rooms is like a coach who never watches practice but only the match results. And learning deserves better than that.
